More Than 35,000 Cubic Yards of Concrete Placed at Chimney Hollow Core

After four years of concrete placements, the final placement for construction took place in August at the tunnel portal wall. Concrete was used in almost every area of the project, including the plinth, spillway, thrust blocks, valve house, tunnel lining, inlet/outlet, tower, staff gauge and more.

Barnard Construction established an on-site concrete batch plant to eliminate the need for concrete deliveries by truck and to greatly reduce construction site traffic. On-site concrete production also provided better quality control over the high-performance concrete and flexibility over the production of more than 35,000 cubic yards of concrete during construction. The batch plant reduced truck traffic to the site by more than 3,500 concrete deliveries.
