While the discovery of mineralized uranium has caused Northern Water and the Chimney Hollow participants to modify its plans, uranium is an issue that can be safely managed. The new reservoir remains an important part of securing future water supply needs for Northern Colorado. Initial Water Delivery into Chimney Hollow Reservoir Delayed
Northern Water and the Chimney Hollow participants have decided to allow more time to gather additional water quality data before initial delivery of water into Chimney Hollow Reservoir. As a result, the initial delivery of water into the reservoir that was scheduled for November 2025 has been postponed. This initial delivery of water into Chimney Hollow is now expected in early 2026; Northern Water will update the public once the delivery is scheduled.
After the discovery of naturally occurring uranium at Chimney Hollow Reservoir, many avenues of data collection have been initiated to learn more about this situation and inform mitigation decisions. In mid-October, Northern Water announced that a small amount of water (less than two percent of the total capacity) would be moved into the reservoir to allow time for real-time data collection and investigations to advance. Once additional data has been collected and further evaluations have been completed, those plans will resume. Project participants have not expected or planned for delivery of water to occur for several years, and this postponement will not affect community water supplies.
