Equipment Spotlight: Crane
The largest crane on-site at Chimney Hollow Reservoir is a 300-ton crane set up with a 240-foot main boom and 80-foot jib. The boom is the arm that extends off a crane’s main body and the jib is a secondary arm that extends off the end of a boom.
This piece of equipment can reach 280-feet of radius and can pick up approximately 12,400 pounds fully extended. At its minimum radius, it can pick up 44,200 pounds. The crane is being used to construct the steep, challenging terrain of the main dam plinth that runs up the right abutment of the dam. Carpenter and concrete placement crews use the crane to move equipment, reinforcement and formwork up and down the steep slope.
