Documentary Screening Attracts 100 to Northern Water

In early November, about 100 people gathered at Northern Water for the screening of a Colorado documentary film exploring the complex interaction between agricultural and municipal water use, including the importation of water from long distances across the watershed.

The presentation of “Mirasol, Looking at the Sun,” on Nov. 3 offered an opportunity for viewers to watch the film and then listen to panelists to discuss the consequences of water transfers from agricultural communities.

The film, produced by the Palmer Land Conservancy, documents agricultural production in the Arkansas River Valley against the backdrop of a new development that would remove some of the water from a nearby farm. As more people continue to move to Northeastern Colorado, many issues highlighted in the film are germane to local communities.

Northern Water is educating local residents about threats to northeastern Colorado associated with water being exported from agricultural areas to the Denver metropolitan area and beyond.

The Berthoud event was sponsored by a variety of local partners including Larimer County, Colorado Open Lands, and the Colorado Water Center and followed a previous showing to more than 100 people in Fort Collins in October.
