Water

Committed to Collecting and Delivering Water

In 1937, Northern Water was created to contract with the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation to build the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. Owned by the federal government, the C-BT Project, collects supplemental water west of the Continental Divide and delivers it to nearly 1.1 million people in Northeastern Colorado for agricultural, municipal, domestic and industrial purposes. Our water project efforts expanded in 1970 with the creation of Northern Water’s Municipal Subdistrict by six Front Range municipalities searching for additional water supplies. This eventually resulted in construction of the Windy Gap Project during the early 1980s.

Our future planning efforts continue with construction nearly complete on Chimney Hollow Reservoir and the final design in the works on the Northern Integrated Supply Project.

The citizens of Northeastern Colorado have gone to extraordinary lengths to develop a safe, reliable supply of water. Today, this water is essential to nearly every aspect of life in our region, whether it is used to fuel our robust economy, grow food and forage, or support environmental and recreational values within our watersheds.

Collecting water from these various projects require a deep understanding of the various programs, delivery components and ownership rights.
