Demonstrating Fire-Smart Landscape Design

This summer, Northern Water’s Water Efficiency Department is working with contractors to install three  fire-smart Sustainable Landscape Templates as part of a new Conservation Garden demonstration. These templates were created in partnership with Norris Design following the Marshall Fire in December 2021 that destroyed over 1,000 homes in Louisville, Superior and Boulder County. The new demonstration will provide an opportunity for visitors to see what a low water, fire-smart, pollinator-friendly landscape can look like. Once complete, they will illustrate how thoughtful landscape design can help protect homes from wildfire while also conserving water.

Key Features of the Demonstration:

  • Defensible Space Zones: The landscapes will follow best practices for creating buffer zones that reduce fire risk around structures.
  • Low-Flammability Plants: Plants have been carefully chosen for their low flammability and ability to thrive in our local climate.
  • Non-Combustible Materials: Gravel, stone and other non-combustible mulches and hardscape features replace traditional, flammable materials.
  • Water-Efficient Design: Grouping plants by water needs and using regionally appropriate species helps reduce irrigation demand while supporting a healthy landscape.
  • Pollinator Friendly Plant Selection: In addition to being water-wise and low flammability, plants are also chosen for their ability to support native pollinators and birds.

This project integrates wildfire preparedness with long-term water conservation. We invite you to explore the new demonstration which will be complete in early fall 2025 and learn how these principles can be applied in your landscape. In the meantime, learn more about the  Sustainable Landscape Templates on our website. You can also visit our current landscape demonstrations every day from sunrise to sunset in the Conservation Campus and Gardens.
