FROM THE ARCHIVES: A Land Purchase in Berthoud
From 1954 to 2003, Northern Water was based in Loveland, at the corner of Eisenhower Boulevard and Wilson Avenue. The location was central to work performed by Northern Water crews at Horsetooth Reservoir, Carter Lake and Boulder Reservoir.
By the mid-1990s, Loveland had grown significantly, with new housing developments being built south and west of the Northern Water headquarters. What had been a location near Bureau of Reclamation offices with ample storage and easy access was becoming crowded and busy. By 1997, Northern Water’s Board of Directors recognized the need to relocate to a site with space for offices, operational buildings and demonstration space. Then in November, Board members chose a 35-acre location on the northern edge of Berthoud for the organization’s new campus. Construction was completed in 2003, and Northern Water moved to its current home at 220 Water Ave., Berthoud, where additional buildings and amenities have been built in the past three years.
The Conservation Gardens are open to the public during daylight hours year-round, and if you have not seen them, they offer the serenity of a public garden while also educating those who visit about better ways to landscape their homes, offices and public spaces.
