New Mapping Tools Help to Tell Regional Water Story

Northern Water is using the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to help manage its efforts to deliver water throughout its boundaries and to tell the story of water resources available in the region. GIS allows users to visualize and analyze complex spatial datasets using maps to give a deeper understanding of our world to help guide actions and decision making.

On the Northern Water website, the GIS Maps feature tells the story of how water can be delivered throughout Northern Water’s Boundaries from Broomfield to north of Wellington, and via return flows to points at the northeastern corner of Colorado. As those mapping tools have become more precise, website users are the beneficiaries of data that historically required much more effort to access.

Even more, the GIS Data Portal offers users access to datasets that identify where individual properties lie in relation to Northern Water and Municipal Subdistrict boundaries, helping community planners and others to learn more about water deliveries from the C-BT and Windy Gap Projects.

As communities in the metro areas and outside of our District Boundaries look to acquire native supplies from Northern Colorado, tools such as GIS mapping are instrumental to identifying trends and illustrate the impacts such exports will have on the region’s communities.
